The final stages of the Northern Way are not just about wanting to enjoy the last days of adventure. It is also the possibility of getting to know a more deeply rooted local cuisine related to pilgrimage. Dishes that are also a true pleasure for the palate.
In this guide, we want to show you some of the most traditional dishes of these last routes if you have chosen the Northern Route. We will take the opportunity to tell you where to eat on the Northern Way from Ribadeo to Santiago. We know that there are so many alternatives that the choice is not entirely simple.
As we have already mentioned, this stretch also has its own traditional dishes. Among some of the delights that you should not miss under any circumstances, we suggest the following:
A typical dish from the municipality of Lourenzá, hence its name. However, you can find it throughout the region and even in other parts of Spain. This is one of the most traditional and popular stews you can find. Moreover, it provides a high caloric intake, making it perfect for pilgrims.
It is made with beans, chorizo, and bacon, although in some towns, you can also find it with pieces of minced pork meat. It is especially popular on cold winter nights after long days of work.
Without a doubt, they are one of the main gastronomic specialties of the entire Northern Way. Scallops are extremely popular around here. In addition to always being tender, they are large and a real delight.
These mollusks are opened and their meat is extracted. It will be cooked along with a stew of onion, peppers, and ham, and then returned to the shell, cheese is added, and it’s put in the oven to gratinate.
As a curious fact, we can say that the shells of scallops are one of the main pilgrim symbols. It is common for many people to use them to make pendants after eating them.
Another traditional dish par excellence within Galician cuisine, consumed throughout the year and suitable for any time of the day.
They are especially popular during Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. However, as we have already said, you can always find them available as an appetizer in most restaurants.
The clams, fresh of course, are cooked in a sauce made with spring onions, wheat flour, garlic, parsley, and white wine. They are usually served accompanied by slices of fresh bread and with a good wine to enhance the flavors of this exquisite combination.
Dessert should never be missing, and in this list, it doesn’t have to be the exception. As peculiar and curious as it may sound, it is made from fresh cheese made from raw milk. That is, it is free of any type of rennet.
It is especially popular as a dessert, usually served with honey, jam, sugar, or the sweet ingredient of your choice. For example, there are some establishments where it is common to serve it with a portion of quince.
Once you enter the last stretch of the Northern Way, you will find several good options to fully enjoy traditional cuisine. Among the best establishments in the area, these are definitely worth a visit:
You will find it at number 5 Camilo Barcia Trelles Street, in Ponte Dos Santos de Ribadeo. It is a restaurant as cozy as it is well decorated, specializing of course in traditional Asturian cuisine.
Here you can choose from a fairly wide and varied menu where Asturian stew, fish, stews, and legumes will always be protagonists. With every bite, you will feel a true explosion of flavors, and even if you have just eaten, you will immediately want to plan your next visit.
All the staff who work here strive to make you feel at home from the moment you arrive.
It is located on Rúa de Franco Street, in the heart of Santiago de Compostela. It enjoys a delicate and modern decoration, but without neglecting its most traditional part, both in terms of cuisine and attention.
Here you have two environments, the bar for a glass of wine accompanied by any of its delicious starters and dishes; Or the dining area, where you can delight in the most exquisite traditional dishes. They are all made with fresh ingredients and that particular flavor.
Whether you prefer fish and seafood or, on the contrary, meats, here you will always find good options to choose from. In addition, you can do it accompanied by a delicious glass of local wine.
Another of the jewels of Santiago de Compostela, O Sendeiro is located on Rúa Olvido, a few meters from the Cathedral. Its menu is well designed. It gives prominence to the typical dishes, divided between starters, mains, and a wide selection of desserts where everyone leaves satisfied.
Everyone here treats you as if you were someone you have known all your life, with a friendly attitude and always willing to give you the best recommendations.
It is considered one of the must-visit places for pilgrims, who after a long journey, come here to relax and enjoy its wonderful surroundings.
Rúa Dos Galeras is the location of this beautiful and particular restaurant in Santiago de Compostela.
While it offers traditional Mediterranean food, it emphasizes Galician cuisine par excellence. However, its strength undoubtedly lies in meats, for all tastes and in the most varied cuts.
Here, at any time or day of the week you come, you will always find a delicious option to decide on. In addition, if you are a little undecided, the staff will recommend the best to you.
